<p>The Southwestern Proving Ground Building No. 129 is a military powder magazine at 195 Hempstead County Road 279 in Oakhaven, Arkansas, northwest of the city of Hope. It is located on property that was once part of the Southwestern Proving Ground, a major military facility during World War II whose largest portion was transformed into Hope Municipal Airport. Building No. 129 is a single-story brick and tile structure, with two bays. There are red steel doors located on the northeast and southwest facades. The roof is gabled, and covered in fire-resistant asbestos sheeting, with vents at the ridge, and an elaborate lightning-protection system. It was built in 1941 to house smokeless gunpowder, and is one of only two brick buildings from the proving ground to survive. It is now used by a private owner for storage.</p><br>
<p>The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.</p><br>
<p>The Alexandre Mouton House, also called the Lafayette Museum , is a historic house in Lafayette, Louisiana. It was the home of 9th Governor and first Democratic Governor of Louisiana Alexandre Mouton, and it is also associated with other historic families.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The listing included three contributing buildings: the two-story main house with an attic and cupola and wooden porches on its first and second floors, an Acadian house connected by a covered wooden porch, and a brick smoke house. The first two have cypress siding and are of briquete entre poteaux construction.</p><br>
<p>The original house, consisting of one room and a kitchen, was built in about 1800 by Jean Mouton, one of the earliest settlers in the Attakapas country, and father of Alexandre Mouton.</p><br>
<p>The Hochplattig is a mountain, high, and the highest summit in the Mieming Chain, a mountain range in the Northern Limestone Alps in the Austrian state of Tyrol.</p><br>
<h2>Topography</h2><br>
<p>The Hochplattig lies on the main crest of the Mieming Chain, which runs from the Wannig in the west to the Hohe Munde in the east. Its immediate neighbour to the west is the Eastern Mitterspitze (Östliche Mitterspitze, ). To the east are the Alplscharte and the Hochwand. To the south of the mountain, below its subpeaks, the Gacher Blick and Judenköpfe, are the Mieming Plateau and Inn valley. To the north, the Ehrwalder Alm separates the Ehrwald Basin from the valley of Gaistal. Here, on the north arête of the Hochplattig, which separates the cirque of Igelskar to the northwest from the Schwarzbachkar cirque to the northeast, is the Breitenkopf. To the north the Hochplattig is characterised by steep rock faces, to the south, steep grassy mountainsides and schrofen terrain dominates.</p><br>
<p>The highest point of the Hochplattig is its rather indistinct main summit with a height of, which lies about midway along the roughly 700-metre-long arête between its west top, the Westeck and its east top, the Ostgipfel.</p><br>
<h2>Ascent</h2><br>
<p>Although the Hochplattig is the highest peak in the area and a good viewing mountain, it is relatively rarely climbed. There is no path along the summit ridge, just a few traces of a route at the end of the waymarked trail on the Gacher Blick to the south. The rest of the route has to be negotiated through trackless, broken schrofen terrain, endangered by rockfalls, up a steep couloir (UIAA grade I) and where it is difficult to orient oneself. The east top is the easiest to reach. It was thus climbed from an early date by local hunters. The main summit, by contrast, was first ascended on 11 August 1872 by Hermann von Barth, and the west top on 21 August 1883 by Ludwig Purtscheller.</p><br>
<p>Most of the other ascents, from the Alplscharte (UIAA III), from the southwest (UIAA II), up the north face (UIAA II) or from the Alplhaus to the southeast (UIAA I), are on very broken terrain and less often attempted.</p><br>

<p>Central Shelby Historic District is a national historic district located at Shelby, Cleveland County, North Carolina. It encompasses 229 contributing buildings in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Shelby. The district is centered on the Cleveland County Courthouse  and public square, established in 1841. The district includes representative examples of Colonial Revival and Bungalow / American Craftsman architectural styles. The district includes the separately listed courthouse, Masonic Temple Building, and Webbley. Other notable buildings include the Webb House, Wells House, Fulenwider-Ebeltoft House, Dr. S. S. Royster House, Bateman House, Washburn Block, city hall and firehouse , Royster Building , First Baptist Church, Ascension Lutheran Church , and Southern Railway Freight Depot .</p><br>

<p>The Patrick J. Ahern House is a historic house located at 403 Laurel Street in Texarkana, Arkansas.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>It is a large 2-1/2 story concrete block structure, set on a corner lot with a low retaining wall, which serves to accentuate the buildings already large scale. The hip roof projects over the street-facing sides, and is supported on those sides by two-story Doric columns. On the side facing East 4th Street, a portion of the upper level has been enclosed, one of the few alterations made to the structure since its construction. It was built in 1906, during the city&#39;s boom years, by Patrick Ahern, an Irish immigrant who owned a dry goods business, and has remained in the hands of his descendants.</p><br>
<p>The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 20, 2005.</p><br>
<p>The Lower Meeting House and East Bethel Cemetery are a historic religious property at 1797 Intervale Road in Bethel, Maine. The meeting house, built in 1831 and only modestly modified since, is a good local example of a typical rural church of the period in Maine; the cemetery has been in use for a longer period, with its oldest dated burial occurring in 1817. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.</p><br>
<h2>Church</h2><br>
<p>The church building is a single-story wood frame structure resting on a granite foundation. It is finished in wooden clapboards and a metal roof, with a pair of brick chimneys rising from its west end. Its main facade has two doors flanking a central sash window. Each doorway has modest Federal styling, with a molded entablature and a large frieze. The sides of the building have three sash windows, and the rear has a single window between the two chimneys.</p><br>
<p>The doorways lead into separate vestibules, each with a closet, which then lead into the main sanctuary. The walls are plaster over lath, with wainscoting in the sanctuary. The sanctuary has rows of pews, a pedestal pulpit ornamented with wood paneling, and a two pump organs in the rear, behind which area a raised platform area traditionally used as a choir loft.</p><br>
<p>The church was built in 1831 as a "union church", serving the East Bethel communitys Baptist and Methodist congregations. Because the churchs records were destroyed in 1891, its alteration history is not fully known. Architectural evidence indicates that the side walls once had additional windows, and that the wall partitioning the vestibules from the sanctuary has been moved.</p><br>
<h2>Cemetery</h2><br>
<p>The East Bethel Cemetery is located just south of the church, and continues to be actively used. It is a roughly rectangular plot, laid out parallel to a former roadway that originally passed in front of the church. The northernmost portion of the cemetery is its oldest section, and is set off from the churchyard by a fence of wrought iron, pipe, and wire. This historic section is laid out in five rows of 22 plots. Burials include Lou Ann Gleason, the first burial, in 1817, and Deacon Asa Kimball, Jr. in 1823, who founded the Baptist congregation in Bethel. There is also a section of the cemetery which was historically dedicated to the burial of the town&#39;s poor, which is presumed to contain unmarked graves.</p><br>
<p>Eller Beck is a small river in North Yorkshire, England, which flows through the town of Skipton and is a tributary of the River Aire. Its channel was heavily modified to supply water for milling in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and although all milling has ceased, the water now supplies power to the National Grid, generated by a turbine at High Corn Mill. There are several underground culverts within the town, and these contribute to the flood risk. In order to alleviate flooding in Skipton town centre, a scheme involving two flood water storage reservoirs has been designed, but the start of the work to implement it was delayed in October 2014 by a shortfall in funding for the project.</p><br>
<h2>Course</h2><br>
<p>Eller Beck is formed from a series of streams rising in the hills to the north of Skipton. These include Black Sike, which rises above the 1,410 ft contour on Out Fell, to the west of Upper Barden Reservoir, and several more which rise in Bilton Ings, close to the 1,395 ft contour, to the south west of the reservoir. With the flow from a spring called Boiling Well, they form Waterfall Gill Beck, which then becomes Eller Beck. It flows around the northern and western edges of Nettlehole Wood and Crookrise Wood, to be joined by Sandy Beck before passing under the freight-only railway line to Swinden Quarry. The railway bridge is below the 560 ft contour.</p><br>
<p>The railway follows the valley of the beck as it is joined by Owlet House Beck, passes under two farm access bridges, and under Tarn Moor Bridge, which carries a minor road to Embsay. The bridge dates from the late eighteenth century, and was altered in the mid nineteenth century. It has a single round arch, is constructed of squared rubble with stone dressings, and is a Grade II Listed structure. The river then meanders through Skipton Golf Club, where it acts as a water hazard for the back nine holes, before it is joined by Haw Beck, which flows from the east alongside the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway for most of its length. It passes under the A65 Leeds to Kendal road through two large round tubes, to enter Skipton Woods.</p><br>
<p>The river through the woods was engineered to provide water which powered wool, corn and saw mills for two centuries. A dam across the river creates the stretch known as the Long Dam, and a sluice above the dam feeds water into the Round Dam, from where water enters a culvert and a high-level channel called Sandy Goit that once fed the mill near the entrance to the woods. Sougha Gill adds to the flow just below the dam, and further down, the water from the mill channel flows under the footpath through a stone lined channel to rejoin the river. The mill began life as a cotton mill in 1785, and was built by Peter Garforth, John Blackburn and John Sidgwick. Wooden frames for spinning the cotton yarn were powered by water, but the water supply was not adequate to support two shifts, and production was scaled down. In 1825, the mill was extended, and the new section used steam power. By 1882, some weaving was carried out at the mill, but it was marked as disused on the 1891 Skipton Town plans.</p><br>
<h3>Town section</h3><br>
<p>As it leaves the woods, the river is separated from the Thanet Canal (or Springs Branch) by a high, narrow towpath. Some of the water enters the canal, but the main flow continues towards the town, through a channel which is in parts paved with stones. The pond for High Corn Mill is adjacent to the river, with an overflow into it. The mill was originally called Soke-Mill, and was first documented in 1310, when it was the only place where tenants of the Manor of Skipton were allowed to have their corn ground, and they had to pay a "mulcture toll", which entitled the miller to keep a proportion of the product. The Earl of Thanet protected the monopoly of the mill vigorously, and the toll was only lifted in the nineteenth century. The mill, along with other properties owned by Skipton Castle Estates, was sold off in 1954. It was acquired by George Leatt in 1965, who began a major programme of restoration. A new waterwheel was fitted in 1967, to replace the original wheel which had been removed around 1900. Since 2010, the water supply has been used to drive a water turbine, to supply power to the national grid. The building has been refurbished to provide accommodation for shops and businesses. It straddles the beck with a single arch, and the present three-storey structure is thought to date from the eighteenth century.</p><br>
<p>Below the mill, the river passes under a Grade II Listed ashlar bridge, dating from the nineteenth century, which carries the B6265 at Mill Street, and continues in the first of several culverts that carry it through and under Skipton. It passes under Water Street, and then surfaces to run beside the canal again. Some old sluices once controlled the flow to Mill Dam, which supplied the water for Millfields Mill, located just above Coach Street. In 1822, the mill was occupied by James Wilson, who was a spinner of worsted. The lower floor was used as a paper glazing mill, but from the 1840s, Messrs. Mason and Hallam used the entire building for spinning worsted. By 1882, it had become a spindle works, making spindles for the textile industry. Mill Dam was still shown on the 1969 map, but had become a car park by 1979. The river continues, passing under Coach Street and some buildings, including a former chapel which was adapted to serve as a base for the fire engine, before turning sharply to the south. It passes under the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and under buildings and the A6069 at Belmont Street. The Environment Agency maintain a gauging station near the Morrisons supermarket to measure water levels, before the river enters a culvert, which carries it under the supermarket carpark to the east of Skipton railway station and the railway itself. Underground, it is joined by Waller Hill Beck, which is also known as Wilderness or Skibeden Beck, and which is also partially culverted under Skipton. To the south of the railway, it runs through a business park, to the east of Sandylands playing fields, and past the Waltonwrays cemetery and crematorium. A final bridge carries it under the A629 Rotherham to Skipton road, before it joins the River Aire.</p><br>
<h2>Flood prevention</h2><br>
<p>Skipton has suffered from flooding in 1908, 1979, 1982, 2000, 2004 and 2007. This results from high volumes of water entering the town through Eller Beck from the north and Waller Hill Beck from the east. Both are culverted within the town, and Eller Beck in particular is prone to carrying woody debris from Skipton Woods into the culverts, resulting in blockages. As a result, a Skipton Flood Alleviation Scheme was developed by the Environment Agency, which would cost an estimated £9.7 million to implement. The three component parts are a flood storage reservoir on Eller Beck, to the north of the A65 road, a similar structure on the Waller Hill Beck, and the construction of flood walls at strategic points within the town.</p><br>
<p>The Eller Beck storage reservoir will consist of an earth dam with a length of 355 yd and a maximum height of 46 ft. It will be 13 ft wide at the crest, and will contain 124,000 cubic yards of material. This will enable the storage of a maximum of 15.3 e6cuft of flood water. A 100 yd culvert will be constructed through the dam, to carry normal river flows. The bottom of the culvert will include baffles to retain materials which will create a low-flow channel to aid fish migration. Flows up to 600 cuft/s will not be restricted, but greater flows will be limited by a control structure, so that the excess water will be stored in the reservoir.</p><br>
<p>Material for the construction of the dam will be obtained from a pit near to the similar structure on Waller Hill Beck, and will be transported to the site along the A65. One of the main objectors to the scheme was the golf club, where the 16th and 17th holes would have to be moved, and three other holes would be flooded when the flood gate is closed. Following consultation, agreement was reached on how the golf course would be remodelled. Within the town, three sections of flood wall will be built along the banks of Eller Beck. At Morrisons open culvert, to the north of the underground culvert beneath their carpark, 50 yd of wall with a maximum height of 2 ft will be built on the left bank, and on the right bank, there will be 32 yd of wall with a maximum height of 4.3 ft. Another 16 yd wall will be built on the right bank of the beck immediately above the Coach Street culvert.</p><br>
<p>In October 2014, the Environment Agency (EA) announced that the start of the scheme had been postponed, due to a shortfall in funding. The total cost for the complete project was £13.8 million, of which the EA were supplying £8.8 million. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) were contributing £1.7 million, with a further £2.1 million coming from Craven District Council, North Yorkshire County Council, the Yorkshire Regional Flood and Coastal Committee, and Yorkshire Water. This left a shortfall of £1.2 million. Discussions had taken place with a number of possibly funding sources, including those particularly affected by flooding, but no additional contributions had been offered. At the end of October, a bid was made to the North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership, which had recently received additional government funding for its Local Growth Deal fund. The shortfall was eventually supplied by the York, North Yorkshire and East Riding Local Enterprise Partnership, on the basis that the scheme would support economic growth in Skipton. The member of Parliament for Skipton, Julian Smith, stated that around 500 jobs would be created as a result of the completed scheme. Work began at the golf course site in June 2015, with the raising of the defence walls through the town expected to take place in the autumn.</p><br>
<p>Although not completed at the time, the scheme received a Yorkshire Planning Excellence Award from the Royal Town Planning Institute in August 2016. The judges recognised the quality of the technical planning work which had been carried out, and the management required to steer it through the complex planning process. By January 2017, the major construction works were completed, with mechanical and electrical work about to start. Landscaping would be delayed until weather conditions were more favourable, and the scheme was due to be finished by the end of the spring.</p><br>
<h2>Water quality</h2><br>
<p>The Environment Agency measure water quality of the river systems in England. Each is given an overall ecological status, which may be one of five levels: high, good, moderate, poor and bad. There are several components that are used to determine this, including biological status, which looks at the quantity and varieties of invertebrates, angiosperms and fish, and chemical status, which compares the concentrations of various chemicals against known safe concentrations. Chemical status is rated good or fail.</p><br>
<p>The water quality of Eller Beck and its tributaries was as follows in 2015.</p><br>
<p>The water quality has deteriorated since 2009, when the section above Haw Beck was rated good for ecological and overall status, and the lower section, which includes data from Skibeden Beck, was rated moderate.</p><br>

<p>The Gideon Hart House is the oldest home in Westerville, Ohio, United States. Built in 1820, the home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>
<p>Gideon Hart and family moved from Connecticut to Ohio in 1816 to take advantage of the land tract of 380 acres. The original tract went from the current land east as far as the current Hoover Reservoir. Hart was a prominent man who built multiple sawmills (due to fire destruction), orchards, farming and a sugar maple stand. He also served as a Justice of the Peace and was integral in the development of Blendon Township, much of which was subsequently incorporated into Westerville. It is now at the front of the subdivision Woodglen. Gideon Hart died in 1859 and he and other family members are buried in the Blendon Township Cemetery on the corner of Dempsey Road and Hempstead Road in Westerville.</p><br>
<p>The house has seen multiple updates over the years, but much of the original structure and details are still intact. There are still burn marks on the original wood floors, imported tile around each of the three fireplaces (installed 1928), and even bark on the main support beam of the home. Most notably, the home&#39;s kitchen, which was added in the 1940s, was completely demolished and rebuilt in 2002-2003. An upstairs bathroom and closet was added to the master bedroom at this time.</p><br>
<p>Redd&#39;s Pond is a pond located in Marblehead, Massachusetts. It was named after Wilmot Redd.</p><br>
<h2>Salem Witchcraft Trials</h2><br>
<p>In 1692, in Salem Village (now Danvers), several hysterical girls were said to have been “afflicted” by witchcraft. Wilmot Redd was among those accused. She was a crusty old woman, not popular with the womenfolk. Married to fisherman Samuel Redd, local fisherman knew her as “Mammy.”</p><br>
<p>A warrant for her arrest was issued in Salem, signed by Magistrates Jonathan Corwin and John Hathorne. On May 31, Wilmot was taken to Salem Village for a preliminary examination. She was indicted and then placed in the Salem jail.</p><br>
<p>Four months later, the trial was held in Salem Towne. She denied the charges, but was allowed no defense counsel. On September 17, she was condemned to hang. Four days later, she and seven others were executed in Salem, on Gallows Hill or a nearby hill.</p><br>
<p>Wimot Redd was the only Marblehead citizen executed for witchcraft. Her small house was next to Old Burial Hill, on the southeast corner of the pond that now bears her name.</p><br>

<p>The Mathewson Block is a historic commercial building at 101 Main Street in the center of Lyndonville, Vermont. Built in 1869, it was the first brick commercial building erected in Lyndonville, which was founded in 1866. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The Mathewson Block occupies a prominent position in downtown Lyndonville, facing east toward Depot Street, the main street of the business district from the west side of Main Street. It is a three story brick structure with Italianate styling. Its ground floor storefronts are modern, while the upper floors have seven bays organized into a 2-3-2 pattern by quoined brick pilasters. Second floor windows are mainly set in segmented-arch windows, while third floor windows are a combination of round-arch and Gothic-arch openings. A decorative brick cornice and parapet extend along the top of the building on the front and sides. The building interior was extensively damaged by fire in 1996, but has been rehabilitated. The upper floors are used for housing.</p><br>
<p>The village of Lyndonville was established in 1866, after a fire extensively damaged railroad facilities in St. Johnsbury to the south, and railroad executives decides to relocate rail facilities to this area. A planned railroad community, the Mathewson Block was built in 1869 by George Mathewson, a businessman who owned a sawmill and a small metal stamp factory. The building was an immediate success, housing commercial tenants even before it was finished, with an auditorium space for social meetings on the upper floor. It is the only major building in the downtown area to survive two fires that swept the area.</p><br>
<p>Located Cooksville in Howard County, Maryland, United States, Poverty Discovered, "Summer Hill Farm"</p><br>
<p>"Poverty Discovered" is named after the 1737 acre land tract Given to Joseph Hobbs by Lord Calvert in 1760. It was then owned by Captain Thomas Hobbs, who was involved in the burning of the Peggy Stwewart. He willed the property to his son, Kentucky General Assemblyman Joseph Hobbs Jr. The slave farm was situated on the road to Ellicotts Mills from Hoods Mill.</p><br>
<p>By 1783, "Poverty Discovered" was subdivided and consisted of 400 acres. In November 3, 1793 Henry Howard sold the Poverty Discovered estate of James Beached at public auction.</p><br>
<p>The Poverty Discovered plantation house was built c. 1760. It is log construction with brick and stone construction additions with left-centered doors. Outbuildings include a log framed structure. In the 1930s a porch was enclosed for a kitchen. William J Bryson owned the house in the 1970s and substantial renovations occurred in 1989. The building is registered by the county as HO-117, with an abbreviated history.</p><br>
<p>In 1966, the Rouse Company added "Poverty Discovered" to the list of local historical names to call their new land development project.</p><br>
<p>The Property is now run as the "Summer Hill Farm" which raises thoroughbred horses for track uses or sale. Neighboring Greenway farms also resides on land once named "Poverty Discovered". In 2012, the resale of the adjacent Woodmont Academy sparked controversy as a high density use of the property next to the historic site.</p><br>
<p>Jones-Jarvis House, also known as General Foster&#39;s Headquarters and Jarvis-Slover House, is a historic home located at New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. It was built about 1810, and is a 2 1/2-story, three bay, side-hall plan, Federal style brick dwelling. It has a one-story brick and frame rear wing. During the American Civil War, General John G. Foster moved into this house, and it served first as his residence and later as part of the headquarters of the Eighteenth Army Corps.</p><br>
<p>It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.</p><br>
<p>Historic New Bern</p><br>
<p>is the second oldest city in North Carolina settled in 1710 by the Swiss and the German. It is named after Bern, Switzerland. It is the home of Tryon Palace which was “the seat of the province’s Colonial government” through North Carolina’s statehood in 1789. The city was captured and occupied by Union troops on March 14, 1862.</p><br>
<p>New Bern sits at the confluence of two rivers, the Trent and Neuse Rivers, and only 37 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The influence of the rivers and nearby ocean had a significant impact on its history. In the 1800’s, it grew into a major port and trading center. Large ballast stones which were used to provide weight and stability to unladen ship can be found in the basement of the Jones-Jarvis House and in the yard.</p><br>
<p>Jones-Jarvis House and Federal Architecture</p><br>
<p>The Jones-Jarvis House is one of New Bern’s outstanding examples of federal architecture. The lot was purchased by Frederick Jones in 1810 for $1,575 and later sold to Moses Jarvis. It was occupied and listed on tax records in 1816. The National Register of Historic Places describes it as:</p><br>
<p>“one of a small number of brick Federal houses in New Bern, all built on a side-hall plan, and all similar. Either because of site, or finish, or the occupations of their owners, however, each possesses a distinct architectural and historical character. This house, with its lots fronting on the Neuse River, is part of a group of nineteenth century brick houses at the corner of Union and East Front streets which is one of the finest architectural complexes in the state."</p><br>
<p>The Eli Smallwood House next door and the Jones-Jarvis house are nearly identical. Across the street is the Slover-Bradham House. It was the Union Army General Burnside’s headquarters, whose "distinctive style of facial hair became known as sideburns, derived from his last name." The house later became that of Caleb Bradham, a pharmacist who invented Pepsi-Cola in 1898.</p><br>

<p>The Southern Railway Depot is a historic building in Decatur, Alabama. The depot was built in 1904–05 along the Southern Railway line. Decatur had become a transportation hub of North Alabama by the 1870s, with its connections to the Tennessee River, the east-west Tuscumbia, Courtland and Decatur Railroad , and the north-south Louisville and Nashville Railroad. It functioned as a passenger station until 1979, when Amtrak cancelled its Floridian service. The station is built of brick painted white, with quoins on the corners. The building has a rectangular central section with narrower wings stretching along the tracks. The central section has a hipped roof, while the wings have gable roofs; both have deep eaves with decorative brackets. The main entrance is covered by a porte-cochère with arched openings. The depot was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.</p><br>
<p>Lake Choctaw is a manmade lake and reservoir in Luzerne County and Schuylkill County in Pennsylvania, in the United States. It has a surface area of 22.1 acres. The lake is situated on Sugarloaf Creek. In the past, the lake had poor water quality and a low pH. However, after the installation of a treatment system on the nearby Oneida Number One Tunnel, the water quality rapidly improved and fish were introduced into it.</p><br>
<h2>Geography and geology</h2><br>
<p>The elevation of Lake Choctaw is 1,266 ft above sea level. The lake is on Sugarloaf Creek, but also receives water from the Oneida Number One Tunnel.</p><br>
<p>The only rock formation in the vicinity of Lake Choctaw is the Mauch Chunk Formation. The only soil in the vicinity of the lake is the Hazleton soil. There are some areas prone to flooding immediately south of the lake. However, there are no such areas immediately north of the lake.</p><br>
<p>The land immediately north and east of Lake Choctaw has a zoning designation of C-1. The land immediately south and west of the lake mainly has the zoning designations of C and R.</p><br>
<p>Lake Choctaw is dammed by an impoundment. The dam is known as the Lake Choctaw Dam. The dam was considered to be unsafe in 1979. The lake is manmade.</p><br>
<h2>Hydrology</h2><br>
<p>Lake Choctaw was historically highly acidic. It also has a low concentration of aluminum. Additionally, the lake serves as an oxidation/precipitation basin, helping to remove aluminum from the water discharged by the Oneida Number One Tunnel.</p><br>
<p>Lake Choctaw has been described as "once-dead, totally acidified". However, more recently, its water quality was described as "very good" in the TMDL for Catawissa Creek. The water quality of the lake is expected to improve further in the future.</p><br>
<p>The pH of Lake Choctaw was between 4.5 and 5.0 prior to the installation of a treatment system at the Oneida Number One Tunnel in 2000.</p><br>

<p>In the late 20th or early 21st century, the Catawissa Creek Restoration Association was involved in a plan to restore the water quality of Lake Choctaw, along with Sugarloaf Creek, Tomhicken Creek, and Catawissa Creek, using a passive treatment system.</p><br>
<h2>Biology</h2><br>
<p>Historically, Lake Choctaw was an infertile lake. However, in modern times, it is stocked with fish provided by the Zion Grove Trout Fishery. These fish include brook trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, and minnows. Freshwater jellyfish were observed in the lake in 2007. Additionally, aquatic insects inhabit the lake.</p><br>
<p>Westview  is a historic residence near Decatur, Alabama. The plantation house was built in 1841 by Jonathan Burleson, a North Carolina native who settled in Huntsville as a child. Burleson became a large land- and slaveowner in Morgan County. One of his sons, Rufus Columbus Burleson, moved to Texas and was an early president of Baylor University. Westview was the site of a Union Army camp during the Civil War. After Burleson&#39;s death in 1866, much of his land was sold, but the 2,600 acres  surrounding the house remained in the family. The two-story clapboard structure has a double-height font portico with a second-story balcony. The house has a central hall on each floor with two rooms on either side, and a kitchen wing off the southwest rear that was added around 1912. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.</p><br>
<p>Bishop Island was an island near the mouth of the Brisbane River in Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Bishop Island was formed by dredging at the mouth of the Brisbane River between 1909 and 1912. It was named Bishop Island in 1912 after Allan Fitzroy Gordon Bishop, the captain of the dredge Hercules involved in creating the island.</p><br>
<p>Many ships were dumped on the island. The Australian United Steam Navigation Companys SS Bingera was dumped in 1926; it was built to provide the mail service between Brisbane, Gladstone and Townsville and became redundant when the railway line to Townsville was completed. The Queensland Governments steam yacht Lucinda was dumped on 28 January 1937.</p><br>
<p>The island became a popular recreation spot visited by private boats and tourist operators.</p><br>
<p>In 1976, the island was used by the Port of Brisbane. In 2004, the port expanded through land reclamation in Moreton Bay, resulting in Bishop Island ceasing to exist as an island, becoming part of the mainland port.</p><br>
<p>The Pacific Gas and Electric Company General Office Building and Annex is a historic office building located at 245 Market St. in San Francisco, California. The building was constructed in 1923-25 to serve as the Pacific Gas and Electric Company headquarters. Architects Bakewell & Brown designed the Beaux-Arts building. The seventeen-story building features an arcaded lower section on the first two stories, a plain vertical shaft, and multiple setbacks at the top four stories. The entire exterior is clad in terra cotta, which is also used to decorate the lower and upper sections. The building&#39;s design complements the neighboring Matson Building.</p><br>
<p>Pacific Gas and Electric began a major expansion period shortly after constructing their headquarters, and they absorbed several other power companies in northern and central California. While business declined during the Great Depression, the company rebounded during World War II, and by 1945 it needed more space in its headquarters. The company built an annex to the building that year; the annex, which is interconnected with the original building, was designed to match the original building&#39;s architecture.</p><br>
<p>The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 1995.</p><br>
<p>The Athens Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District is a historic district in Athens, Alabama. Athens was founded in 1818 when Robert Beaty and John D. Carroll began selling tracts of land. The following year, the town was chosen as the county seat of the newly formed Limestone County. Commercial development around the courthouse square was swift, aided by the strong cotton market. The town and courthouse suffered heavy damage during the Civil War in the Battle of Sulphur Creek Trestle. Athens&#39; revival was slowed by major fires in 1882, 1894, and 1897, as well as the Panic of 1893. Redevelopment was spurred again in the 1910s and 1920s by a diversified economy with increased manufacturing, and in the 1930s by electricity provided by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Notable buildings in the district are the Limestone County Courthouse, built in 1919 in Neoclassical style with Palladian influences. The current Post Office building was completed in 1933. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997 and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 2012.</p><br>
<p>The Matson Building is a historic office building located at 215 Market Street in San Francisco, California.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The building was constructed in 1922 - 1924 to serve as the headquarters of the Matson Navigation Company, then the largest shipping and transportation company between the West Coast and Hawaii.</p><br>
<p>In addition, the building held mainland offices for three of Hawaiis Big Five corporations and multiple smaller Hawaiian firms, making it a prominent fixture in San Francisco - Hawaii commerce. Architects Bliss & Faville designed the Renaissance Revival building. The sixteen-story building is divided into three sections; the lower and upper sections feature extensive ornamentation, giving the building a column-like appearance. The outside of the building is clad in terra cotta, which is also used for the buildings decorative elements. The buildings design complements the neighboring Pacific Gas and Electric Company General Office Building, which was built around the same time. In 1945 - 1947, a matching annex was placed on the building to provide more space for Matsons offices.</p><br>

<p>The Wannig  is a 2,493-metre-high mountain in the Mieming Chain in the Austrian state of Tyrol.</p><br>
<h2>Location</h2><br>
<p>The Wannig forms the western end of the Mieming Range. To the southwest lies the village of Nassereith in the Gurgltal valley, to the south is the Holzleiten Saddle that links the Gurgltal with the Mieming Plateau. To the north lies the Fern Pass, a crossing from the Gurgltal to Biberwier in the Ehrwald Basin. To the east the Mieming Chain continues with the Handschuhspitzen and the Marienbergjoch (1,789 m).</p><br>
<p>The upper 400m of the Wannig are characterised by crags and boulder fields, below which is a wide belt of mountain pine. In the lower regions of its western and southern slopes are the remains of old mine workings. Here in the Feigenstein Field (Revier Feigenstein), lead and zinc ore (Smithsonite) was mined.</p><br>
<h2>Ascents</h2><br>
<p>The Wannig is usually climbed from the Nassereither Alm (1,718 m, also called the Muthenaualm) to the northwest, which can be reached from the Fern Pass, from Albangerle north of Nassereith, from Biberwier or from the Marienbergjoch. This route runs across the western flank, the Green Wanne (Grüne Wanne), to the summit (UIAA grade I in places). Another route from Nassereith meets this path at a height of about 1,780 m.</p><br>
<p>From the Marienbergjoch the Wannig can be climbed from the Handschuhspitzen (UIAA I); other ascents along the north arête (UIAA I) and the north face (UIAA III) are rarely used.</p><br>

<p>Baudin Rocks, also previously known as the Godfrey Islands, is a group of islets on the south east coast of in the Australian state of South Australia about 8.3 km North-northwest of Robe. The islet group was discovered and named by Matthew Flinders in 1802 after Nicolas Baudin. The group has had protected area status since 1965 and since 1972, the group has been part of the Baudin Rocks Conservation Park.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Baudin Rocks is a group of islets on the south east coast of South Australia about 8.3 km north-northwest of the town of Robe. The group consists of two major islets and at least 17 smaller islets with a total area about 5 hectare. The maximum elevation is 12 m. As of 1996, the smaller northern islet is the most accessible in the group, having a sandy beach on its north-western corner.</p><br>
<h2>Formation, geology and oceanography</h2><br>
<p>Baudin Rocks was formed about 6000 years ago when sea levels rose at the start of the Holocene. The island group and adjoined submerged reef are composed of Bridgewater Formation calcareous sandstone. The island group is part of a submerged ridge that rises from a depth of 10 m within 400 m to 800 m on the group’s west side while on its east and south side while the same transition occurs over respectively distances of approximately 400 m and 1,600 m.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<h3>Flora</h3><br>
<p>As of 1996, the two larger islets were reported as having vegetation and this is limited to both the east-northeast and to about 50% of the total surface area of these islets. The dominant species is the low, sprawling Nitre bush. Surveys reported in both 1994 and 1996 have completely different lists of less dominant species. As of 1994, the other species included leafy sea heath, ruby saltbush, coastal lignum and leafy peppercress while the introduced African boxthorn occurred on the south islet. As of 1996, the other species present on the northern islet as of 1996 included Bower Spinach, Austral Seablite, Southern Sea-heath, a single bush of African Boxthorn and possibly Variable Groundsel. The larger south islet which had not been visited at the time of reporting in 1996 was ‘reported to have many shrubs of the native Australian Box thorn’.</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>As reported in both 1994 and 1996, fauna surveys indicate that about 30 species of birds live or breed on Baudin Rocks, including the little penguin, black-faced cormorant, crested tern, fairy tern and the bridled tern. The nankeen night heron is reported as breeding on the southern islet. A colony of Australian sea lions was reported as being present on the north islet as of 1994. A feral pigeon control program was undertaken during 1982 and 1983 with assistance from the South East Field and Game Association. As of 1996, evidence of presence of both sparrow and an unidentified predatory bird presumably from the mainland was found respectively in the form of a ‘single nest was found in the African Boxthorn bush’ and ‘regurgitated pellets containing the bones of small mammals’.</p><br>

<h3>Aboriginal use</h3><br>
<p>As of 1996, the literature had not cited any archaeological discoveries specific to Aboriginal use of land on Baudin Rocks. However, the anthropologist Norman Tindale did state in 1941 that on the basis of a partial translation of a song recorded in 1937 that Baudin Rocks may be of cultural significance to the Baundik people of the lower south east of South Australia particularly in respect to a legend known as the Emu and the Native Companion.</p><br>
<h3>European discovery and use</h3><br>
<p>Baudin Rocks was discovered on 13 April 1802 by Matthew Flinders and named after Nicolas Baudin. The group was named Godfrey Islands in 1843 by Colonel Frame after Godfrey Thomas, stepbrother of George Grey, the then Governor of South Australia. In 1831, John Hart, then the master of the schooner Elizabeth and later a Premier of South Australia, left a man on Baudin Rocks to carry out sealing. Baudin Rocks is one of the island sites from which guano was mined under licence from the South Australian Government prior to 1919.</p><br>
<h2>Protected areas status</h2><br>
<p>Baudin Rocks first acquired protected area status as a Fauna Reserve proclaimed under the Fauna Conservation Act 1964 on 17 August 1965. Since the enactment of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 in 1972, the group has been part of the Baudin Rocks Conservation Park.</p><br>

<p>Baxter Clock is a historic street clock located in New Bern, North Carolina. It was manufactured in 1920 by the Seth Thomas Clock Company, and erected in 1930 opposite the front entrance of Baxter&#39;s Jewelry Store. The four-sided clock has brass and steel works contained in a spherical cast iron case which consists of three stages. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places  in 1973, but in 1977, an accident resulted in the broken clock being placed in storage for almost fourteen years. The Baxter Clock is thought to be one of three operating clocks of its kind remaining in the country.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Street clocks were installed in many American cities from the 1860s to early-20th century, with the two largest manufacturers on the East Coast being the Seth Thomas Clock Company and the E. Howard Clock & Watch Company. The Baxter Clock stands in front of 323 Pollock Street, a Dutch Revival style property built in 1918 that was the longtime home of the Baxters Jewelry Store and currently home to the Fine Art at Baxters gallery. It was manufactured by the Seth Thomas Clock Company of Thomaston, Connecticut. The clock was built in 1920, but features a style and design similar to ones made in the late-19th century. Baxters Jewelry Store, previously located on Middle Street, moved to Pollock Street around 1920, but didn&#39;t have the clock installed until 1930.</p><br>
<p>On May 5, 1977, a furniture truck backed into the clock, damaging the pedestal. Benny and Della Baxter hired a salvage company the following day to use a crane to lift the clock from the pedestal so it could be repaired. During the procedure, the clock was accidentally dropped causing it to smash into pieces on the sidewalk. The cast iron casing of the clock was relatively unscathed, but much of the workings was heavily damaged. The accident shocked the Baxters and residents of New Bern. Dabney Coddington, then a curator at Tryon Palace, said "That block of Pollock Street really looks naked, believe me." The Baxters attempted to repair or replace the clock, but were unsuccessful. The surviving pedestal was all that remained on the street for the next fourteen years while the broken pieces were stored in the basement of the jewelry store. In 1990, the non-profit Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation wanted to see if it was possible to restore the clock. Swiss Bear was granted ownership of the clock by the Baxter family on the condition it was restored. Swiss Bear in turn told city leaders the organization would help restore the clock if the city took over ownership and maintenance costs following the restoration. A Swiss Bear representative contacted the clock manufacturer Verdin Company of Ohio which had the original patterns of the clock case. Swiss Bear began the Baxter Clock Restoration Campaign which raised the necessary $28,000 needed for repairs. The repaired clock was dedicated on April 20, 1991, with special guest Patricia Dorsey, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, in attendance. The clock is believed to be the only one of its kind remaining in North Carolina.</p><br>
<h2>Design</h2><br>
<p>Baxter Clock is approximately 20 ft tall and is illuminated at night. The clock is supported by a slim column on top of a tall pedestal while metal supports extending 10 ft below the ground act as an anchor. The pedestal is painted black while the clock and column are brown. The pedestal features three vertical square panels, each covered with fluting, on all four sides. The top of each pedestal face includes the imprinting, "Seth Thomas", the clock manufacturer. Behind the panels on the north and south sides are doors with an iron knob allowing access to the clockwork. The clockwork inside the pedestal is an iron weight pulled down two iron rods by gravity. When this occurs, a steel and copper pendulum is swung, which in turn moves the hands of a small clock located behind the pendulum. The face of this clock is inscribed with the text "Seth Thomas, No. 2139, July 24, 1920". The interior clock regulates the four exterior faces of the clock.</p><br>
<p>The pedestal and column are separated by two stepped stages. The fluted column features a molded base and Corinthian style capital decorated with fern palmettes. The top of the clock was cast as four separate sections. There are visible seams on each corner of the clock as well as decorative lion heads surrounded by a palmette border. Each lion has an iron ring in its mouth. Each face of the clock measures 3 ft in diameter and is protected by a glass cover. The time is indicated by hour, minute, and second hands made of iron, with black capital Roman numerals (hour), black squares (minutes), triangles (hour divisions), and diamonds (three hour intervals). The north and south faces feature black lettering reading "BAXTER THE JEWELER" while the east and west faces include the lettering "DR. J. O. BAXTER EYESIGHT SPECIALIST". The top portion of the clock includes Arabesque crockets above each face and a three-tiered finial. The finial is decorated with twisted fluting and leaf molding.</p><br>
<p>Central Elementary School is a pair of historic school buildings in New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. The First New Bern Academy is located on New Street and was built about 1806. It is a two-story, brick building with a hipped roof and two interior ridge chimneys. It features a semicircular tetrastyle entrance porch with Tuscan order columns and a roof cupola. It has a rear addition dated to the late-19th century. The Second New Bern Academy was built in 1884 to replace the previous building. The buildings retained their educational functions until 1971. The 1806 building now houses a museum, while the 1884 building has been converted into apartments.</p><br>
<p>The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.</p><br>
<p>Cedar Grove Cemetery is a historic cemetery located at New Bern, Craven County, North Carolina. It was established in 1800, and is encircled by a magnificent paneled coquina wall built in 1853 and broken by a towering triple-arch entrance. It includes family plots, some of which are enclosed by cast iron fencing. Located in the cemetery is the Confederate memorial. The cemetery was owned by Christ Episcopal Church until 1853, when it was transferred to the town of New Bern.</p><br>

<p>A volcanic eruption of Mount Ontake took place on September 27, 2014, killing 63 people. Mount Ontake is a volcano located on the Japanese island of Honshu around 100 kilometres  northeast of Nagoya and around 200 km  West of Tokyo. It was the first fatal volcanic eruption in Japan since the 1991 collapse of a lava dome at Mount Unzen, and the deadliest volcanic eruption in Japan since Torishima killed an estimated 150 people in 1902.</p><br>
<h2>Timeline</h2><br>
<p>The volcanic eruption happened at 11:52 Japan Standard Time (UTC+9). There were no significant earthquakes that might have warned authorities in the lead up to the phreatic eruption—caused by ground water flashing to steam in a hydrothermal explosion. The mountain is a popular tourist attraction for hikers, being considered good for beginner climbers and relatively safe, and the weather was also good, so there were several hundred people on its slopes at the time. The police said that they were searching for people remaining on the mountain. By 17:00 the police reported that three people were missing and were believed to be under ash. Another person was rescued from under the volcanic ash, but remained unconscious. Six people were injured, one by flying rocks.</p><br>
<p>By 19:30, the number of people believed to remain buried in ash rose to six. Nine people had been reported to be injured, five of whom had fractured bones. Later, at least 40 people were reported to be injured, and another 32 were believed to be missing. The JSDF began carrying out helicopter searches for missing people. One woman was reported to have died from the eruption.</p><br>
<p>On September 28, the police reported that over 30 people had been found in "cardiac arrest" near the summit. Japanese emergency services often refer to people who show no vital signs, and are apparently dead, as being in cardiac arrest, as legally, only an authorised physician can pronounce a person dead. By September 29, a total of 36 bodies had been found, and 12 people had been pronounced dead; the search was suspended due to dangerous conditions, including hydrogen sulfide gas spewing from the mountain. On September 30, fears of escalating volcanic activity on Mount Ontake continued to hinder rescue efforts.</p><br>
<p>On October 1, 2014, eleven new bodies were discovered by rescuers on the slopes of Mount Ontake after searching in previously unexplored areas of the ash-covered peak, bringing the total body count from 36 to 47; a revision after an erroneous initial count of 48.</p><br>
<p>On October 4, 2014, four new bodies were discovered by rescuers on the slopes of Mount Ontake after searching in previously unexplored areas away from trekking roads. Those four were confirmed to have died.</p><br>
<p>Typhoon Phanfone prevented searching activities from October 5 till 6. On October 7, three more bodies were discovered, bringing the total of confirmed deaths to 54. As of October 11, the death toll is at 56. The victims of the Mount Ontake eruption were mourned on October 27, as authorities and residents marked a month since the volcano killed 57 people and left six others missing.</p><br>
<p>The Blackburn House  is a historic residence near Athens, Alabama. The house was built around 1873. It is a one-and-a-half-story Saltbox-style house with an Italianate portico. The portico has four chamfered edge columns supporting a hipped roof. The portico is flanked by two-over-two sash windows on each floor; the same windows are used on the sides on the first floor and for the front rooms on the second floor. Small casement windows are found above the portico and in the attic areas on the rear sides of the house. The house has a center-hall plan with four rooms on the ground floor and two on the upper floor. Since restoration in the early 1980s, the house has served as an antique store. The house was listed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage in 1983 and the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.</p><br>

<p>The house was built in 1840 by Robert Donnell, a minister who had come to Athens in the 1820s to establish a Presbyterian church. After his death in 1855, the house passed to his son, James. It was purchased in 1869 by Joshua P. Coman in order to establish the Athens Male College, beginning the house&#39;s association with education. In 1879, it was purchased by the city and became part of the public school campus, and sold ten years later to the North Alabama Experiment Station and Agricultural School. The house returned to city ownership in 1936, and is today part of the campus of Athens Middle School. The house is a two-story frame structure clad in clapboard. A double-height portico with paired square columns covers the entry. The main block has a center-hall plan, with a two-story, gable roofed wing off the rear.</p><br>
<p>The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 19, 1973.</p><br>
<p>The George S. Houston Historic District is a historic district in Athens, Alabama. The district lies to the west and north of the public square, and features homes of some of the town&#39;s most prominent residents. Development began in the district soon after the town was founded in 1818; there are five homes remaining from the antebellum period. The district saw moderate growth between the Civil War and the early 1900s, most of which are Queen Anne and Victorian styles. The majority of houses in the district were constructed between 1908 and 1939. As the need for housing in the town grew, larger antebellum lots were subdivided and new construction was added. Larger houses tended to be American Foursquares, while middle-class houses were bungalows and cottages, some with Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival details. The district is entirely residential, with the exception of the First Methodist Church, built in 1925 in Neoclassical style; 400 North Jefferson was built in 1935 as a hospital, but later converted to apartments. Other notable properties in the district include the George S. Houston House, which was converted into a public library. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.</p><br>
<p>The House at 1254-1256 Montgomery Street is a historic house located at 1254-1256 Montgomery Street in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The house was built in 1865 on a secondary summit of the hill, which was also the site of a windmill that burned in 1861. The house&#39;s Italianate design features bay windows on the front corner, double-hung sash windows decorated with pilasters and cornices, and a bracketed cornice along the roofline. While the house originally had only one story, its second story was part of its original plan and constructed by the 1890s. The house is one of the few buildings on Telegraph Hill which survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and its aftermath.</p><br>
<p>The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 31, 1979.</p><br>
<p>The Robert Beaty Historic District is a historic district in Athens, Alabama. Robert Beaty was one of the original founders of Athens. An Irish immigrant who settled in Virginia, Beaty and his associates purchased 160 acres  around a spring, and began subdividing the land for sale in 1818. A small village of log structures had formed by 1826, and began to be replaced by permanent homes over the next decade. Beaty&#39;s own house was completed in Federal style in 1826. William Richardson, whose son William, Jr., served in the USA House of Representatives, completed his home the following year. The district contains 86 contributing properties representing architectural styles including Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Eastlake, Victorian, and Spanish Colonial Revival. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.</p><br>
<p>The Fries Miners Cabins are a group of six small houses located on the 500 block of Kennedy Street, in the Starr Hill neighborhood adjacent to downtown Juneau, Alaska. The six were built as essentially identical structures in 1913 to house miners working in the local gold mines. The houses are 1-1/2 story structures of wood frame construction, and are in the Craftsman style popular at the time. Of the more than 200 miner houses built during Juneaus gold boom, these are among the few that survive.</p><br>
<p>The six buildings were included in the Fries Miners&#39; Cabins historical district, also known as Kennedy Street Mine Workers Houses and Kennedy Street Historical District, on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.</p><br>
<p>The Magruder Plots are experimental winter wheat field plots at Oklahoma State University established in 1892. They are the third longest running such field trial in the United States, following the Morrow Plots established in 1876 at the University of Illinois , and the Sanborn Field established in 1888 at the University of Missouri-Columbia . They are examples of long-term experiments.</p><br>
<p>Originally planted in the fall of 1892 by A. C. Magruder, first</p><br>
<p>professor of agriculture at Oklahoma A & M (now Oklahoma State University),</p><br>
<p>these plots were established to obtain information on the</p><br>
<p>ability of the soil to continue to produce good yields of wheat without</p><br>
<p>fertilization.</p><br>
<p>Researchers have conducted hundreds of experiments</p><br>
<p>comparing various fertilizer treatments with manure applications and</p><br>
<p>without such treatments. The plots became the center for wheat soil</p><br>
<p>research in the region and provided constant data which helped farmers</p><br>
<p>get maximum yield from their arid climates and naturally dry soils.</p><br>
<h2>Changes Over Time</h2><br>
<p>For the past 122 years there have been several changes in the Magruder Plots.</p><br>
<p>1. Between 1893 and 1898 the field was not fertilized and the yield</p><br>
<p>data were taken from the 1.25 acre plot as a unit.</p><br>
<p>2. The plots were divided in the summer of 1899, and yields were taken separately from</p><br>
<p>the north and south halves to allow measurement of soil variability.</p><br>
<p>Between 1899 and 1929, the south half was fertilized with barnyard</p><br>
<p>manure and north half left unfertilized. No commercial fertilizer</p><br>
<p>was used.</p><br>
<p>3.) From 1930 to 1947 ten treatments were evaluated. Six of the ten treatments have been continued to the present. From 1930 to 1937 the check plot continued to produce near maximum yield; that was not the case from 1938 to 1947.</p><br>
<p>4.) In 1947 university officials decided that the area where the</p><br>
<p>soil plots were located had to be used for space for a new dormitory.</p><br>
<p>That year the soils were moved to the present location. Before the</p><br>
<p>construction of the dormitory, university officials dispatched workers</p><br>
<p>to carefully move the surface and immediate subsurface soils from six</p><br>
<p>of the ten main plots to a location about one mile west on the OSU</p><br>
<p>agronomy farm. The reddish clay subsoil under the new location was</p><br>
<p>similar to the subsoil under the original plot. Dr. Horace J. Harper,</p><br>
<p>agronomist in charge of the plots for 1926 to 1951, described the</p><br>
<p>task of moving the soil as follows:</p><br>
<p>"The top eight inches of soil was removed with a bulldozer from</p><br>
<p>an area of 100 feet in length near the center of each plot and was</p><br>
<p>piled on each end of that plot. The subsurface soil from 8 to 16</p><br>
<p>inches was excavated and transferred to prepared trenches dug in a</p><br>
<p>east-west direction on the agronomy farm."</p><br>
<p>Studies conducted on the site after the move, when compared to</p><br>
<p>similar studies conducted before the soil was tampered with, have</p><br>
<p>shown that moving the plots of soil did not cause significant change in</p><br>
<p>their relative crop-producing capacities. No evidence has indicated</p><br>
<p>that the move disturbed the soil or hindered the research value of</p><br>
<p>the area, which continues to be used for its original purpose.</p><br>
<p>Six of the ten treatments (check since 1892, manure since 1899, P, NP, NPK, and NPKL since 1929) were moved to their present location. The response to N over P remained small over this time.</p><br>
<p>5.) From 1958-1967 wheat grain yield increased substantially as a result of applying N in addition to P.</p><br>
<p>6.) In 1968 N rates were doubled in all the treatments except the unfertilized check as a result of increased yield potential of newer varieties.</p><br>
<p>7.) From 1978-1987 this was the last period where moderate increases in grain yield were observed as a result of applying on P versus the check.</p><br>
<p>8.) From 1988 to 1994 wheat grain yield increases were first detected as a result of applying K.</p><br>
<p>Remarkably, after 122 years of continuous winter wheat production under conventional tillage, the check plot that has never received any fertilization continues to produce yields greater than 1 Mg/ha. Despite the decline in soil organic matter from 4 to 1% grain yields in the check continue to show slight increases, probably due to improved genetics.</p><br>

<p>Woodside is a historic residence in Belle Mina, Alabama. The land on which the house was built was originally part of Alabama Governor Thomas Bibbs estate, Belle Mina. Thomas son, Porter Bibb, built Woodside in 1861 for his daughter, Mary Chambers Bibb. The two houses stand one-half mile  apart. Woodside is a two-story Greek Revival house, originally with a central, double-height portico that was extended to the full width of the façade in the early 1900s. The house has a center-hall plan, with two rooms on either side of a hallway on both floors. The rear of the house was originally a pair of one-story wings, but a second story was added in an early 20th-century renovation. Greek Revival details continue inside the house, such as mantels and architrave-framed panels in the stairwell. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.</p><br>
<p>Sugar Pine Reservoir is a reservoir in Placer County, California, located approximately 7 miles north of Foresthill. The reservoir was flooded in 1982, and today supplies water to the community of Foresthill and hosts a number of recreation facilities.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>The reservoir was created in 1982 with the construction of Sugar Pine Dam over North Shirttail Creek, a tributary of the North Fork American River, as part of the Auburn-Folsom South Unit of the Central Valley Project. Although Sugar Pine Dam was funded through the Central Valley Project, it was never integrated into the project operationally, as it was intended to work with the never-completed Auburn Dam. According to the USA Bureau of Reclamation (USBR), during the 1987–1992 California drought the reservoir performed well, filling and spilling and meeting its water obligations each year but one.</p><br>
<p>In 2003, the community of Foresthill purchased Sugar Pine Reservoir, Sugar Pine Dam, and its conveyance system from the USBR for $3.1 million., the Foresthill Public Utility District provides water to 1,875 homes and 75 businesses in and around Foresthill.</p><br>
<h2>Recreation</h2><br>
<p>Recreation at Sugar Pine Reservoir is managed by the Tahoe National Forest under an agreement with the USBR. The reservoir offers four main recreation areas around the lake. The complex, which opened in May 1985, contains two campgrounds, boat ramp, hiking trails, picnic area, swimming beach, and a trailer dump station. The facilities are operated under a concession agreement between the USA Forest Service and L&L Inc.</p><br>
<p>The Mount Banping is a mountain in Nanzih District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan.</p><br>

<p>The name Banping means half screen, named so because of the mountain steep side resembles a painted screen.</p><br>

<p>During the Qing Dynasty rule of Taiwan, the mountain was the site of the most important limestone quarry in Taiwan. After the quarry was closed in 1997, the mountain was turned into a nature park. Vegetation is used for its slope protection and the old cement plant&#39;s grit removal pond was transformed into Banping Lake Wetland Park in the neighboring Zuoying District.</p><br>

<p>Visitors can hike the mountain via its wooden walkway to enjoy the panoramic views of Kaohsiung from the top of the mountain, which includes Lotus Pond, Zuoying District, Port of Zuoying, Niaosong District and Yancheng District.</p><br>

<p>The Houjin River  is a river in Nanzih District, Renwu District and Ciaotou District of Kaohsiung, Taiwan.</p><br>

<p>The river has its source originated from Mount Guanyin in Dashe District. Once it reaches Bagualiao, the river passes through industrial areas. Once it passes the factories, the river comes to the Shihlong Creek and Yuanjhonggang Creek water intake stations, which supply irrigation water for 1,390 hectares of farmland in Ciaotou and Yanchao District. After that, it passes through the fish-farming area in Ziguan District and finally into the sea of Taiwan Strait at the Yuanjhonggang Wetlands.</p><br>

<p>The river is accessible within walking distance north east of Houjing Station of Kaohsiung MRT.</p><br>
<p>Penguin Island is an island in the Australian state of South Australia located in Rivoli Bay on the state&#39;s south east coast of approximately 1.5 km south of Beachport. From 1878 to 1960, it was the site of an operating lighthouse. Since at least 1972, it has been part of the Penguin Island Conservation Park.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>Penguin Island is located about 1.5 km south of Beachport and about 120 m south-east of the headland known as Cape Martin. The island consists of two outcrops which are reported as being unofficially known as Outer Penguin Island and Inner Penguin Island. The latter outcrop came into existence in 1968 when a storm caused the collapse of a section of Cape Martin thereby creating a channel of about 40 m in width between the remains of the headland and an isolated stack of remnant cliff now known as Inner Penguin Island. Both outcrops are surrounded by vertical cliffs that rise to between 10 m to 15 m in height above sea level, with exception to the south-western end of the outer island where the ground falls steeply to a rocky spit. A wave cut platform surrounds most of the island. The major outcrop along with minor outcrops and submerged strata form an island which is about 400 m long and up to 150 m wide. The island is partially covered with sand which itself has partially developed in a soil. The inner island was reported in 1994 as being accessible by foot at low water while the outer island was only be accessed by boat or by swimming.</p><br>
<h2>Formation, geology and oceanography</h2><br>
<p>Penguin Island was formed about 6000 years ago when sea levels rose at the start of the Holocene. The island is composed of Bridgewater Formation calcareous sandstone which is a remnant of now partially submerged Robe Range which was formed during the Pleistocene. The island which is located in relatively shallow water rises from a depth of 10 m within 1,000 m to its west, 200 m to its south and 300 m to its east.</p><br>
<h2>Flora and fauna</h2><br>
<h3>Flora</h3><br>
<p>As of 1994, Penguin Island was reported as having a low shrubland dominated by grey saltbush while as of 1996, it was reported as having a shrubland dominated by coastal daisybush. Other species present as of 1996 included native species fleshy saltbush, austral seablite, bower spinach and leafy peppercress while introduced species included Athel pines, African boxthorn and mallows. In 1977, an introduced species, marram grass was planted on the inner island to stabilise sand drift and to assist in the regeneration of native vegetation.</p><br>
<h3>Fauna</h3><br>
<p>As of 1996, Penguin Island was reported as accommodating breeding populations of little penguins, crested terns, short-tailed shearwaters and silver gulls. In addition to being notable as being a breeding ground for seabirds, the island is also known as a site for the study of both the crested tern and the silver gull. The crested tern and silver gull population has been the subject of banding programs respectively since 1953 and 1968. Feral birds such as starlings and feral pigeons have also been recorded on Penguin Island. Mammal species observed on the island include Australian fur seals and rabbits which have been specifically observed on the inner island.</p><br>

<p>As Penguin Island has been historically accessible by foot at low water, it is possible that local Aboriginal people may have used the island as a source of food, particularly sea birds such as little penguins and silver gulls.</p><br>

<p>Penguin Island was first described by Baudin in 1802 possibly in respect to its relevance as a source of danger to navigation:</p><br>
<p>It ends in a fitting cape, at the tip of which there lies a small island, reaching about half a league out to sea. Its southern section is low and narrow, but the northern part is and can be seen from a fair way off. The island is completely surrounded by rocks and so is hardly approachable. The same applies to the whole coast, which is shielded by a reef and a line of more or less large rocks that prevent any landing there (Baudin, in Cornell, 1974).</p><br>
<p>While it appears that Baudin did not name the island, it is likely that its naming was made in acknowledgement of the presence of little penguins on the island.</p><br>
<h3>Navigation aids</h3><br>
<p>The island was the site of an operating lighthouse from 1878 to 1960 until its service was replaced by the Cape Martin Lighthouse. As of 1994, the lighthouse tower, a shed and a small jetty on the east side of the island were still present with the former two reported as being in ‘reasonable condition’, while the jetty was reported as having ‘fallen into disrepair’.</p><br>

<p>Since 1961, Penguin Island has enjoyed protected area status and at least since 1972, it has been part of the Penguin Island Conservation Park.</p><br>

<p>The Tucker Carriage House is a historic carriage house located at Raleigh, North Carolina. It is a large, three-story outbuilding that is the only remaining structure from the estate of Rufus Sylvester Tucker, a Confederate army officer and prominent merchant in post-Civil War Raleigh. It is believed to have been built around 1883, when Tucker purchased materials for a "wagon shed", but does not appear on maps of the area until 1909.</p><br>
<p>The carriage house is 35 ft wide and 100 ft long, and originally housed the estate&#39;s wheeled vehicles as well as the horses and mules that pulled them. The building is sheathed in clapboard on the first floor, and shakes on the second. The roof is covered with slate shingles and is capped by a square cupola that served to ventilate the interior.</p><br>
<p>Cottonwood Community Center, built about 1889, is significant for its historic associations with the development of Stillwater, Oklahoma&#39;s rural agricultural community. The Center is indicative of school house architecture that was popular in the late 1800s and early 1900s in the Stillwater community.</p><br>
<p>Of the four remaining one-room school structures in the Stillwater area, only the Cottonwood has been in continuous use from the time it was built to the present. It has been, and continues to be, an important</p><br>
<p>focus of life for the rural community west of the town. The other one-room school house in Payne County listed as a National Historic Place is the Pleasant Valley School.</p><br>

<p>was constructed, using hand-cut wood.</p><br>
<p>The building belongs to the School District of Stillwater but the community residents do maintenance and repair. The land belongs to a corporation of community residents.</p><br>
<p>The Jones General Store and Esso Station is a historic automotive service station and general store on Arkansas Highway 84 in Langley, Arkansas. It is a single-story structure built out of fieldstone, with concrete door and window lintels. The car porch extends in front of the building, supported by three fieldstone columns topped by simple capitals. It was built in 1939, and served as the towns general store, operated by Johnny Jones, until the 1980s, when the store closed and the building was converted to residential use. The building is locally significant in part for a circular millstone, used in the towns first gristmill, which is embedded in the wall near the eastern corner.</p><br>
<p>The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.</p><br>
<p>The Murfreesboro Cities Service Station is a historic automotive service station on Arkansas Highway 26, facing the northeast side of the town square in Murfreesboro, Arkansas. It is a simple single-story brick building with a cross-gable roof and modest English Revival styling. It was built in 1939 by A. P. Terrell, a local builder, using bricks from a building that had previously stood on the site. It was operated as a Cities Service  gas station into the 1980s, and was purchased by the Murfreesboro Community Foundation in 1989. The building plan for this structure is similar to that of other surviving Cities Service stations, including a station in Rison and another in Clinton.</p><br>

<p>The Josephine Reifsnyder Lustron House in Stillwater, Oklahoma is a historic prefabricated home. One of several Lustron houses built in Oklahoma during the post World War II housing shortage, this house is a well-preserved two-bedroom Lustron Westchester model with a detached Lustron garage.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>The house was built in 1949 by the Lustron dealership of Hall and Abercrombie of Cushing and Stillwater. The dealership built two Lustrons in Cushing after constructing this first Lustron in Stillwater. It is constructed of steel components including interior and exterior enameled steel panels.</p><br>
<p>This house was purchased by Josephine Reifsnyder in November 1949. The house changed hands several times between 1962 and 1983, and has been a rental property in the Oklahoma State University campus area for many years.</p><br>
<p>It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 23, 2009.</p><br>
<p>The Hygieostatic Bat Roost is located in Kendall County, approximately 1.5 mi east of Comfort on the south side of RM 473, in the USA state of Texas. It was erected in 1918 on property owned by former San Antonio Mayor Pro Tem Albert Steves, who had commissioned San Antonio health officer Dr. Charles A. R. Campbell to design the structure. The shingled pyramid-shaped raised tower stands 30 ft high. One dormer serves as an entrance for the bats, while the other dormers are ornamental. The lower portion of the tower allows access for humans. The concrete base of the tower is raised 7 ft off the ground, facilitating wagons being driven beneath to collect the guano.</p><br>
<p>Campbell had been researching a method of controlling the spread of mosquito-carried malaria, by encouraging the insect&#39;s natural enemy, the bat. Although mosquitoes have other natural enemies, many of them are only active during the daytime hours, while bats fly in search of food during the night when mosquitoes are most active. Campbell patented his bat roost design and erected several of them in the San Antonio area beginning in 1907. When the bat roost was built on his Kendall County property, Steves coined the name Hygieostatic Bat Roost based on the Greek words hygiea (health) and stasis (standing). The descendants of Albert Steves still own the property where the tower is located. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1981. In 1983, the roost was added to the National Register of Historic Places.</p><br>

<h2>Geography</h2><br>
<p>It is 6.4 km (4 mi) wide at its entrance and 14.5 km (9 mi) long. The city of Magadan with its port (formerly Nagaevo port) is located at the head of the bay. Ice occurs in the bay from the end of November to the middle of June. It was named after Russian hydrographer, admiral Alexey Nagaev. It has been described as the best mooring place in the Sea of Okhotsk.</p><br>
<h2>History</h2><br>
<p>Between 1852 and 1869, American whaleships anchored in Nagayeva Bay to obtain wood and water and boil oil. They called it Jeannette Harbor, after the ship Jeannette (340 tons), of New Bedford, which frequented Taui Bay in the early 1850s.</p><br>
<p>During the Gulag era the bay was used as a transit point for Gulag inmates coming by sea and further directed to camps of Magadan and Kolyma to man the Dalstroy works. Since 1937 the headquarters of Sevvostlag were situated by Nagaev Bay.</p><br>

<p>The Colcord Farmstead, now Longmeadows Farm, is an historic farm property at 184 Unity Road in Benton, Maine, USA. With a development origin in 1786, it is recognized architecturally for its farmstead complex, a fine example of late 19th-century agricultural architecture. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 29, 2005.</p><br>
<h2>Description and history</h2><br>
<p>Longmeadows Farm occupies about 194 acre of land in central Benton, bounded on the west by the Sebasticook River, and extending eastward across Unity Road (Maine State Route 139). The farm complex stands just west of the road, and consists of a collection of wood frame buildings, most of which were built after 1880. The house, built in 1882 by John Colcord, is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure with Italianate styling. It has a gabled roof whose eaves are decorated with paired brackets, and is sheathed in clapboard siding. The interior retains period high quality woodwork, including original floors, plaster walls, and mouldings.</p><br>
<p>The house is connected via two structures, now called the shop and shed, to the barn. The shop is the oldest structure on the farm, dating to the early 19th century. The barn is a large three-story bank barn, with a high stone foundation, and was built by John Colcord out of sawn and hand-hewn timbers. Other buildings in the farm complex include 20th-century structures for milking, equipment storage, and a chicken house; there are also a windmill and c. 1950 sawmill on the property.</p><br>
<p>Most of the land that makes up the farm was sold as a unit in 1786 by the Kennebec Proprietors, the area&#39;s first landowners. Unlike many surviving historic farms, this one did not have a long period of ownership by a single family until the 20th century, passing through thirteen owners in its history up to the start of the 21st century. Its present farm complex is largely the work of either John Colcord, who owned the property in the late 19th century, or the Brown family, who have owned it since 1937.</p><br>
<p>The Bond Street Historic District is a residential historic district on Bond Street in Augusta, Maine, United States. The district comprises seven residential buildings built primarily in 1884 by Edwards Manufacturing Company, which was a textile manufacturer in the area. The buildings housed mill workers and their families from 1878, when the first building was constructed until 1946, when the properties were sold to private owners. The buildings are the only surviving mill worker housing in Augusta. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.</p><br>

<p>Bond Street is a short residential through street, joining Water Street (Maine State Route 104) with State Street (Maine State Route 27). It is located north of Augusta&#39;s downtown area and immediately south of Bond Brook, near its mouth at the Kennebec River. The street is lined with seven 1-1/2 story residential wood frame structures, noted for the similarity of scale, setback from the road, and generally vernacular style. On the north side of the street are two multi-unit buildings, each housing four units, and one single-family house. On the south side there are four duplexes.</p><br>
<p>Bond Street is located at the northern edge of Augustas early development, and was probably laid out about 1838. Bond Brook had been a source of industrial power since the 18th century, and the 1837 construction of a dam across the river (since removed), just upstream of Bond Brook, brought a wave of industrialization and population growth. In 1882 the main mill was purchased by the Edwards Corporation, which was one of the citys largest employers by the end of the 19th century. Edwards, as well as earlier mill operators, all built housing for their workers. These were built between 1878 and 1884; although designed to house seventeen families, the 1900 census recorded twenty families in residence, with a total headcount of 167 inhabitants. This collection of houses represents the best-surviving group of 19th-century worker housing units to survive in the city.</p><br>
<p>The Grandison D. Royston House is a historic house at Columbus and Water Streets in Historic Washington State Park, Washington, Arkansas. It is a single-story wood frame structure, about 55 ft wide and 51 ft deep, with a hip roof pierced by two chimneys with corbelled tops. The main entry is centered under a projecting gable-roof porch, and is framed by sidelights and transom windows. The porch is supported at the front by pairs of square columns with moulded capitals and a square plinth. At the back of the house is a shed-roof addition which housed the kitchen. The interior of the main block is divided into four rooms, two on either side of a large central hall.</p><br>
<p>The house was built c. 1833 by Grandison Delaney Royston, then at the start of a long and distinguished career in Arkansas politics, serving in the state legislature, as United States District Attorney, and as a state militia general during the American Civil War.</p><br>
<p>The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is one of the finest early examples of the Greek Revival in the state.</p><br>
<p>The Bennett Bridge is a historic covered bridge in rural northern Oxford County, Maine. The bridge, now closed to traffic, formerly carried Littlehale Road over the Magalloway River, about 1.5 mi south of the village Wilsons Mills in Lincoln Plantation. Built in 1901, it is one of Maine&#39;s few older covered bridges. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.</p><br>
<h2>Description</h2><br>
<p>The bridge is a Paddleford truss bridge, a type of truss in which diagonal cross members are connected to King posts, fastened by metal bolts. It is 92 ft in length, resting on granite abutments. Its total width is 168", with an interior roadway width of 148". Its total height is 23 ft (from roadbed to top of gable), with a portal clearance of 15 ft. Its sides are clad in vertical boarding roughly 2/3 of the way to the roof; the ends are also clad in vertical boarding above and around the portals. The bridge is further stabilized by wire cables at each corner, which are anchored to concrete settings about 25 ft from the bridge.</p><br>
<p>Bennett Bridge was built in 1901, to provide access from a handful of small farms to Maine State Route 16, the major road through Lincoln Plantation. It spans the Magalloway River at a point where it is swiftly flowing, passing through a fairly narrow valley in the hilly region. The bridge saw heavy use from logging trucks that also worked in the area,</p><br>
<p>Abbott Memorial Library is the public library of Dexter, Maine. It is located at 1 Church Street, in an architecturally sophisticated Renaissance Revival structure, built in 1894 as a gift from George Amos Abbott, a local mill owner. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.</p><br>
<h2>Architecture and history</h2><br>
<p>Abbott Memorial Library is located in the heart of Dexters main village center, on a block bounded by Church, Hall, and Pleasant Streets, and Main Street Hill. The sloping block is landscaped, with an open lawn raised from Church Street with benches in front of the library, and a small garden in the rear, along with memorials to the towns military. The library is a T-shaped masonry structure, one story in height, with a brick exterior, granite foundation, and a hipped slate roof. The main facade, facing west toward Church Street, is five bays wide, with a projecting gabled entry at the center. The gable is fully pedimented, with a modillioned and dentillated cornice that continues around the building. The pediment houses a floral design surrounding a central medallion. The entrance below is set in a tall round-arch and keystoned opening, the arch supported by attached Ionic columns and flanked by floral motifs. The building cornice is adorned with swags, and incised with the names of prominent European literary figures. The projecting section at the rear is a later addition.</p><br>
<p>The building was built in 1894 to a design by J. Williams Beal, and is an unusually sophisticated work for its setting in the rural interior of Maine. It, and the land on which it sits, were the gift of George Amos Abbott, owner of Amos Abbott and Company, a local woolen mill. The land and building cost $32,000.</p><br>
<p>Quaker Ridge is a former railroad station on the White Plains branch of the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway in the city of New Rochelle in Westchester County, New York. The station is named for the Quaker Ridge section of northern New Rochelle along the Scarsdale Town border. It was constructed by the New York, Westchester & Boston commuter railroad which linked Manhattan with the less populous northern Bronx section of New York City and the primarily undeveloped countryside of Westchester County.</p><br>
<p>The station was State-determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places but is not listed there.</p><br>
<h2>Development</h2><br>
<p>The Quaker Ridge property was seen as exceptionally well located for residential purposes. It was high, perfect in drainage, rolling in topography, and afforded magnificent views of Long Island Sound. Initially fifty acres of this property was surveyed and placed on the market. The property fronted on the Quaker Ridge Station, and intersected with wide, newly built drives and boulevards. The Quaker Ridge Improvement Company was later organized for further development of the surrounding area.</p><br>
<h2>Station</h2><br>
<p>Since the NYW&B was constructed all at once, one architectural firm, Fellheimer & Long with Allen H. Stem Associated Architects, designed all the stations, platforms and signals for the line. For reasons of continuity, maintenance and appearance, concrete was used as the material for all stations. Built in Renaissance, mission or classic styles, the NYW&B stations are considered among the most well-designed depots in the country. The design of the Quaker Ridge station’s peaked roof was inspired by Manhattan’s Pennsylvania Station. The main structure and covered platforms are of concrete and steel, with tile covering the roof area. The station proper is 52 feet in length, while the platforms represent a covered area of 340 feet, 170 feet on each side.</p><br>
<p>From an architectural standpoint, the layout of the station was very well-designed. One unusual feature was the below-grade entrance leading to the station house located on an island platform between the northbound and southbound tracks. Commuters on the line were able to enter and leave the building with no problems and the station house protected them from the elements when necessary. The proximity to New York was a strong point of the station and the area, with commuters able to reach the southernmost point of Manhattan within fifty-three minutes or less.</p><br>
<p>The station was built in 1912 and remained in operation until 1938 when financial distress caused the New York, Westchester & Boston Railway to shut down. The property lay dormant for many years until it was purchased by a local artist in the mid-1950s for conversion to a private residence. The building still retains most of the original details including the two original passenger platforms. The original driveway and turn around for the station has been converted to a dead-end street.</p><br>
